In this section, we will speak to special or unique situations specific to patients and caregivers as well as provide some general information. Use the guide at left to choose which section applies to you. Adult patients is for those aged 19-60 years. Pediatric patients applies to newborn babies and children up to age 18. Senior patients is for those over 60 years of age. Our Caregivers & Others section applies to caregivers, family, friends and co-workers.

Our website is complete except for the individual patient pages within this section. We hope to complete these pages in 2013. All information for those pages exists within our online support forum. We suggest patients and caregivers in Canada join our support forum in the meantime. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The emergency care information below applies to every patient, regardless of age, and their caregivers.

Mastocytosis Society Canada jointly consulted with our lead medical advisor Dr. Gary Sibbald and MedicAlert Canada to establish a standard engraving and wallet card protocol for mastocytosis patients in Canada nationwide. These protocols will help newly diagnosed patients and MedicAlert Canada understand the priorities for managing emergencies related to our disorder. These protocols enable MedicAlert to advise Paramedics and other Medical Emergency personnel of the correct procedures and cautions to help them save your life, wherever you are in Canada. Until emergency medical professionals learn about this disorder, having a MedicAlert membership will close this knowledge gap and protect you while guiding those who are trying to save you.

This protocol applies mainly to newly diagnosed patients. As we all learn after years of living with our disorder, we may have alternate or additional details for engraving on MedicAlert emergency identification tags.

Mastocytosis Society Canada and MedicAlert Canada standard protocol for our disorder follows:-

MedicAlert Bracelet Engraving numbered by line:
  • Line 1 CALL NOW
  • Line 2 MASTOCYTOSIS
  • Line 3 ANAPHYLAXIS
  • Line 4 DRUG ALLERGIES
  • Line 5 NEEDS EPIPEN

  • MedicAlert Wallet Card will state Caution with the following drugs: -
  • Analgesics (NSAIDS, Morphine, Codeine)
  • Ester Local Anesthetics
  • Antibiotics (Vancomycin, Polymyxin B, Amphotericin)
  • Alpha and Beta Blockers
  • Muscle Relaxants (Succinylcholine, Atracurium)
  • Dextran, Dextromethorphan, Quinine, Preservatives
  • Other triggers to avoid: - Foods, insect stings, alcohol

  • We encourage all Mastocytosis Society Canada members to register with MedicAlert Canada.

We suggest all patients use the bracelet form of MedicAlert identification. Paramedics are not authorized to open tops or shirts unless it is clear the situation requires it. If you are a female and/or a child wearing a necklace or watch form of MedicAlert, it may not be found or recognized as an emergency tag.

As a registered MedicAlert member, you will be able to utilize their electronic records no matter where you are in Canada. They will speak for you when you are unable or not in company of your caregiver. Please remember to update your MedicAlert records whenever your medications, known triggers, next of kin, physicians, or address/phone numbers change. MSC registered support forum participants are reminded to update their MedicAlert records regularly.

MedicAlert offers a Membership Assistance Program for those with limited financial means.
